5 Best Ways to Relieve a Cough in 24 Hours

Cold and flu season, the time of year we try our best to protect ourselves from catching all the many different types and strains of colds and flu that are out there. Try as we might sometimes those little buggers catch us.

I grew up with perpetual bronchitis and in the winter months. I did everything I could to prevent it, but that darn bronchitis cough somehow always found me. Thankfully, through dietary changes I’ve been able to live bronchitis free now, but I feel the pain of those who are still suffering though it.

Here are my top five remedies to kill a cough quick. Done together, these five ways will kill a cough in 24 hours.

  1. Rest.

    Set aside 24 hours that you can focus on sleeping as much as possible. Your body needs sleep to repair damaged tissue and combat the virus that is attacking it.

  2. Peppermint, nettle, slippery elm bark and lavender tea mixture.

    When have a cold I make a large batch of this and drink it throughout the day and night. It not only soothes the throat, but also provides a relaxing effect.

  3. Honey and lemon. 

    In a cup of warm water add the juice of one lemon and 2 teaspoons of honey. Drink this 3-5 times throughout the day. It will help calm the spasms of the cough.

  4. Bone broth.

    Your grandma was right, “feed a cold and starve a fever.” Your body is trying it’s hardest to fight the attack. Bone broth has concentrated nutrients that will give it the tools it needs to fight.

  5. Flour compress.

    This is the best way to stop the coughing. combine 1 TBS honey, 1 TBS olive oil, and 2 TBS flour to make a paste. Apply this to your chest. Cover with a large bandage or towel and secure in place with medical tape (or if you’re in a pinch, like I am whenever this happens, any old tape will do.)

I know it’s tough having a cold, but look at it as a free day to enjoy lounging and reading a good book or watching a movie you haven’t had the time for. Try and enjoy the down time.
